This responds to the need to decelerate the pace of the world that came with the pandemic. Many people turned to crafts and crafts, while others took refuge in the warmth and hug of a hand -woven sack, ready to dress.Entrepreneurs identified this need and soon show their skills.

In Quito, at least four brands offer parts that require days and even weeks of production: crochet, knots, rippa and unlabelled.

Crochet was born in November 2019, by the hand of Hee Jin Park, his mother and sister.Park weaves with crochet from a child.“I like woven sacks and there were no options that adapted to my body, because I'm little. Then I started doing my own bags, ”he says.

When he lost his job, in 2019, he began to make unique pieces to sell. Now prepare capsule collections, although few models continue to weave, to maintain exclusivity. The current collection is called Basics and is characterized by elements such as the Bombita stitch, which is applied in sleeves.

In February 2020 he launched his Instagram page and formalized his project, which focuses on the fabric with trapillo crochet or cotton strips, to create bags, wallets and envelopes.“People are looking for things done in Ecuador, that fills me with pride. In addition, there is a sustainable fashion movement, ”says Sorensen about the growth of this type of ventures.

Rippa is María Pía de la Torre. The artisan creates jewelry made with the Japanese technique Miyuki, which is characterized by using crystals and a special nylon thread. It is recognized by the brick point and geometric shapes.

“There is greater interest of customers, but people still have what they do by hand. They ask for low prices and not recognize everything that entails, for example, a couple of arts takes between six and eight hours, ”he explains.

Unlabelled is a fashion brand that designs pieces with character, according to its founder, designer Estefanía Vela.During the pandemic, Vela learned to weave with the help of his mother and about eight months ago he launched his first fabric sack."I uploaded a story to Instagram and sold immediately," he says.

Prepare each piece takes about three days.“It is a seasonal garment, but I find it interesting how we take something ancient that is to weave, you mix the wisdom of your mother and your grandmother to create a‘ fashion ’garment; It seems to me an enriching experience, ”concludes Vela.
