Impound Comics creator hopes to make live-action movie based on Sacramento superhero

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—

A Sacramento-centric comic book series is hoping to get the big-screen treatment.

Writer and creator Brent Trayce Sands said he created his characters for a while and then decided to bring his passion to the role during the extra time he had during the pandemic. Impound Comics then released its first comic in November. of 2020.

The original inspiration for him came from a popular Marvel superhero character.

"The thing that made me go ahead and make it a company was when I saw the Black Panther movie," Sands said.

A year later, he opened a DOCO store, where he sells his comics, figurines, t-shirts, and other memorabilia.

Now, he's trying to make a live-action movie. It's a dream, years in the making, he says. But he needs the help of the Sacramento community to make it a reality.

The comic series follows the journey of Anthony "Impound" Endsley, an MMA fighter and single father, struggling to make ends meet. But he eventually gets superpowers and develops some special abilities.

"Strength," Sands said, describing some of Impound's abilities. "Laser vision - one of my favorite powers."

Impound is Sacramento's first superhero, according to Sands. He says setting his story in California's capital city is one way to build a local audience.

"If you feel like you have some sort of connection to the hero, he's from the same town as you, he gives you more hope or more pride," Sands said.

The illustrations in the different issues highlight local landmarks, such as Tower Bridge, as well as the city's skyline.

"You can look and say, 'I recognize those buildings,'" Sands said.

Impound Comics is now hoping its title character jumps off the comic book page and into the real world in a live-action movie.

Sands teamed up with Sacramento director Mikey Rare to preview the film. A short clip from the trailer has been released, showing Impound roaming the streets of Sacramento, fighting his enemies. Sands said creating a feature film was actually his original idea.

“Now we're going back to what Impound was when I created it. It wasn't a comic, it was a movie," Sands said.

The full version of the trailer comes out on February 2.28. That's also when a Kickstarter campaign starts, so they can raise funds to be able to film the movie.

“Depending on how this campaign works out will determine what our next move is,” Sands said.

Sands said he is working to become a formidable force in his field and wants Impound to make an impact.

"I hope it's inspiring for people who are young creatives," Sands said.
