Walmart files dispute with Kanye West for this logo

Walmart recently filed an objection against Kanye West's latest Yeezy logo with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on April 21 this year. The retail giant claims that the rapper's possible new clothing brand logo, described as "rays of a sun" in the January 2020 trademark paperwork filed by Yeezy, resembles the old logo that for 13 years. It has belonged to the supermarket chain.

Taking a position opposing Yeezy's trademark application, Walmart said the submitted logo could cause "confusion" and prompt a "false suggestion of connection" between the two brands. Yeezy currently has a footwear and apparel collaboration with Adidas and also recently signed a 10-year deal to produce a product line for The Gap.

The retail giant also argued that "Yeezy could sow confusion by using the design for entertainment purposes, given that Walmart already" sold products and ran marketing campaigns in association with Queer Eye cast Jennifer Garner, Sofia Vergara, Kendall and Kylie. Jenner, Drew Barrymore and Ellen DeGeneres to name a few." It goes on to note that Yeezy "is associated with Mr. Kanye West, a recording artist, fashion designer, record producer, and former United States presidential candidate."

Walmart entabla disputa con Kanye West por este logotipo

The New York Post tried to contact West's camp for his opinion, and so far, they have not received a response. Walmart, for its part, addressed a letter to the Post dated April 19 that it had previously written to West's attorneys as evidence that the artist had been uncooperative.

“As we mentioned in our correspondence in July and August 2020, January and February 2021, and our conference call in March 2021, Walmart has repeatedly sought to understand the planned use of the Yeezy app, with the goal of finding ways in which the Walmart Spark design and the Yeezy app can co-exist with each other," the letter said. "However, to date, we have not received any conclusive information from Yeezy regarding the planned use or any cooperation from Yeezy in finding common ground."
