At just 23 years old, Javier González Etxebeste had no doubts about starting his own business. Faced with the prospect of not finding a job in his area, he recently decided to rent the premises at number 24 Calle Santiago de Irun, where since September 1 the sign for 'Lamiarri Men's Hairdressing and Barbering' has been displayed.

"You were certainly brave.

–I am one of those who thinks that you always have to go with everything. I didn't think much about it either, I was just clear that I didn't want to stay stopped, so I launched myself.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP«It was clear to me that I did not want to be unemployed, so I set out to open my own business»THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME«Lamiarri is the name of the farmhouse where my mother grew up, in the Bidasoa neighborhood»

What was it that attracted you to this world?

-My mother is a hairdresser too, so it's something I've seen since I was little. And I've always liked it, but a couple of years ago I got a little more into that world and last year, to see if it was just a hobby or if I really liked it, I decided to study Hairdressing and Barbering at an academy in Valladolid.

– Why Valladolid?

-I have a friend who studies History there, and since I had never left home, I thought it would be good to have support. And the truth is that he was very good.

– How long did you spend in that city?

–Six months, it is not a very long training. I left on October 12 last year and came back in April.

And did you immediately start looking for a job?

«Ahora los hombres se cuidan más y las barbas vuelven a estar de moda»

–From the beginning I got into it, but it was very complicated, especially with the issue of the pandemic, so I decided to open my own business.

So it all happened pretty fast...

-It's just that I can't be still, I was clear that standing still I wasn't going to stay. In June I found the place and it seemed perfect, because Santiago is a quiet neighborhood, but at the same time it is a place of passage. So I took it and with the help of my friends and family I reformed it and on September 1 I opened the hairdresser-barbershop.

–Where does the name Lamiarri come from?

–It is the name of the farmhouse of my mistress's family, in the Bidasoa neighbourhood. In fact, when they built the new Navarra road, they named one of the tunnels Lamiarri because the village is below it. My mistress grew up there and previous generations too. So what could be better than giving the business a familiar name and Basque as well, which was what I wanted.

–The logo that appears on the wall, have you designed it?

–No, the logo was designed by my friend Jon Benet, who is an artist, he has an incredible hand. In fact, he is dedicated to making 3D videos. And the one on the wall of the barbershop was painted by another friend named Jon Caballero.

-I also see that you have a Real Union scarf hanging.

I have played football all my life, always at Real Unión. I am very unionist, so the scarf could not be missing.

–It hasn't been long since you opened the barber shop but, are you happy? Do you think you got it right?

-Totally! I know I was right because I get up in the morning and thinking that I have to come to work doesn't make me lazy, on the contrary, I come happy. In addition, I see that people support me, that some clients have already repeated from one month to another and that, from what they tell me, they leave very happy.

–What is the profile of your clients?

-There is everything. In these months many young people have come, but also children and adults, even quite old people.

–And what is the service that you are most in demand of, hairdresser or barbershop?

-Quite similar. There are those who come just to get their hair cut, others just for the beard and others for both.

-And within each discipline, what is the most requested?

–It also depends, especially on age and hair type. In hairdressing, something that is asked of me a lot is the famous gradient, which is very fashionable now and most kids wear it. It consists of cutting so that on the sides and in the area of the neck, from the top to the bottom, the hair goes from more to less, without any steps. That is to say, that there is not a hard contrast, but that it degrades little by little. On the other hand, people who are a little older tend to ask for more of the classic cut. In barbershop, what they demand of me the most are beard trims, profiling and reducing quantity.

-In recent times the concept of barbershop is booming again, is not it?

-Yes, it seems that now men tend to take more care of themselves and also beards have become fashionable again.

-Who wants to come to Lamiarri, where can make an appointment?

–You can call 638 13 68 61 or send me a direct message on Instagram (@lamiarri.barbershop). You can also find me at the premises from Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

–A wish for the future of Lamiarri?

-Keep growing. And if I have a job and it goes well, I would like to hire someone else and be able to be two attending. But that for the future. For now my goal is that, to continue growing but without being overwhelmed, go month by month and we'll see what happens.
