Social networks: a potential digital risk for work? This is what the experts say
Can using social networks during working hours cause problems for the workers of a company?
Nowadays, sharing everything that happens through social networks is a very common action, which often includes work life. However, the intensive use of social networks can endanger work, especially if they are prohibited and the policies of a company are violated.
Although social networks allow you to maintain a communication link with family and friends, it can also be a risk factor that could be affecting the workplace. A survey conducted by the Cyber Readiness Institute (CRI) revealed that 56% of organizations are affected by the use of social networks by their workforce during work hours.
The data also showed that 82% of companies allow employees to use devices to access work emails or other data. However, 64% state that more than half of their workers have social networks and use them at all times.
Posting everything on social media (especially during business hours) can also pose a security threat to businesses. When you don't have a correct approach and your work life is overexposed on social networks, it can be an unnecessary risk factor.
Given this situation, ESET experts shared with NotiPress some recommendations for using social networks during business hours. First of all, know the company's policies, if the use of social networks is prohibited, it is best to stick to the regulations.
The best way to post something work-related on social media is to be aware of company guidelines and policies. Going to the human resources area and requesting the internal regulations could help to know if there are restrictions on the use of social networks or not.

When companies assign portable devices, their primary function is for work, but most employees also use them for personal purposes. For this reason, ESET specialists point out that care must be taken when downloading images, sharing files or opening links and avoiding being a victim of any type of malware.
If this is not a strong reason not to use a device personally, sometimes companies monitor the gadgets connected to the VPN, therefore, many activities are often reviewed. Avoiding malware is an important point and being discovered for not working during business hours for spending time on social networks, too.
Exposing yourself too much on social networks can cause problems, not only in the workplace, but also in matters of private life. For example, sharing photos of co-workers or offices can give malicious people information about the environment where you work.
Adding too much information on social media can make it easy for someone to impersonate a person and commit identity theft. This is without counting other risks such as being a victim of physical robbery, extortion or some type of fraud.
Social media photos of work areas are very common, for example, a desk, the office, or capturing the moment of a meeting. This can have consequences if personal or business information is leaked, so it is better to review the photo before publishing it and verify that there is nothing compromising.
Social networks are part of everyday life and it is very difficult for companies to stop their workers from using them. For this reason, experts recommend having a protocol for their use without prohibiting them outright, and choosing to teach their workers to manage them in a good way.
